Yang Jian, the founder of the Sui Dynasty, was a diligent and wise ruler who worked hard to govern the country and promote prosperity. He established a strong foundation for his reign by appointing capable officials and implementing effective policies.
Spurred by his mother's jealousy, Emperor Yang Jian took great care to present a humble image in front of her. During one inspection visit to Yang Guang's residence, he found that it had been neglected for some time. This led him to believe that his son did not enjoy luxuries or entertainments, which might contribute to his future success as an emperor.
Meanwhile, Yang Guang secretly manipulated others into praising him while criticizing Prince Yong. As Emperor Yang Jian grew older and weaker due to illness, he began considering changing the succession plan.
Upon learning about this decision from insiders such as Li Xiurong and Yuan Yanwu (元岩), Emperor Yang Jian became furious with Prince Yong but eventually passed away without being able to change his mind.
In order to secure power before being deposed as heir apparent himself, Prince Yong moved quickly against those loyalists who opposed him while trying desperately keep control over any remaining avenues of influence within court circles.
