在清朝乾隆年间，浙江石门县洲泉人吴孟举，以其良田千亩和内阁中书的职位享受着荣华富贵，但他心中却缺少一件宝贵之物——长生不老的仙术。听闻苏州民间每年的四月初八为“神仙节”，天上神仙下凡一游，他决心亲自前往探究。

那年四月初八，吴孟举提前抵达苏州，不仅不乘轿车，还只带了四名亲兵，兴高采烈地融入热闹的人群。他穿梭于街巷之间，不断观察来往行人的模样，寻找非凡之人。他的眼睛仿佛能够洞悉世事，而他的脑海里，却总是浮现出一个问题：能否真正见到那些传说中的神仙？

就在他准备跨过桥梁时，一名衣衫褴褛的叫化子走下桥来。那叫化子的模样与举止，让吴孟举感到有些熟悉，他的心灵突然被一种强烈的预感所驱使。他紧紧盯住那个叫化子，并向他深深作了一揖。这让那个叫化子大惊失色，因为他并不知道自己竟然会受到这样尊敬的一位官员的礼遇。

"Wu Mengju, you are a high-ranking official in the imperial court, why would you bow to me?" The beggar asked in confusion.

"I have heard that you are Lü Dongbin, one of the Eight Immortals," Wu Mengju replied with a smile. "And I recognize your copper coin by its shape and size."

The beggar was taken aback and nodded his head. "Indeed, I am Lü Dongbin. And since we have met today, let me give you some poems as a gift." He then wrote on the railing of the bridge with his bamboo staff:

For decades I've lived in Suzhou,

No one knows my true identity as an immortal.

Only Wu Mengju from Zhouquan knows,

That our meeting is not meant to be.

Lü Dongbin finished writing and disappeared instantly. Wu Mengju was left standing alone at the bridge railing, feeling both amazed and enlightened. He realized that he had indeed encountered an immortal being who had imparted valuable wisdom upon him.

Inspired by Lü Dongbin's words, Wu Mengju decided to abandon his official position and return to his hometown of Zhouquan. He distributed his wealth among the villagers and lived out the rest of his life in simplicity and solitude, devoting himself to literature and scholarship.

According to legend, after Wu Mengju's death, someone attempted to desecrate his tomb but found it empty except for a few books he had written during his lifetime. This only served as further testament to how deeply he had embraced Lü Dongbin's teachings about living a simple life free from material attachments.
