Qin Han Times, the Price of Official Position Rises to a Sky-High Level
In ancient China, selling official positions was not uncommon. Tracing back, it was first initiated by Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi. However, in the feudal era when the emperor ruled over all under heaven, selling an "official position" wasn't much to speak of? During the Qin and Han dynasties, buying and selling official positions gained fame primarily through Cao Cao's father Cao Song. At that time, after inheriting his father's "Fei Ting Hou" title as Cao Song did for his son-in-law Li Guangli in 190 BCE during the reign of Emperor Wu of Han (141-87 BCE), he bought a Taishou position with two tons and a half gold!
The institution of buying officials was so popular that it became known as "selling hats." It continued into later periods until Ming dynasty when people began calling this practice "selling hats."
Qin Shi Huangdi opened up sales for officials' titles for the first time —— “paying one thousand stones’ worth of grain to gain one rank higher”
In ancient times when China was divided into kingdoms ruled by kings or princes before unification under one ruler called an emperor who held absolute power over all lands within their realm except those owned personally by him or her; there were no fixed prices set on how much land could be purchased at any given time because these deals often involved large sums which had been accumulated through generations.
During this period there existed many different ranks among people living within these kingdoms including nobles like dukes or marquesses who held high status but also commoners such as farmers working hard every day just trying make ends meet. These rankings would determine what kind job they might hold should they become eligible after passing certain tests etcetera...
