左丘明对他说道:“国君呀,您要好好想一想!孔子如果当了司寇,那些卿大夫就会失去权柄。既然这样,您与这些人商量能有什么结果呢!他们为了保住自己手中的权力,一定会添油加醋地说孔子的坏话,为他出任司寛设置障碍。

“我听说,在周朝有个人,特别羡慕别人的裘皮服装,准备自己也做一件。他听人说,狐狸皮做的裘皮服装最为珍贵,他脑子里就转开了念头:山上的狐狸非常多,为何不上山去,与它们商量一下呢?

“这样一想,他不禁高兴起来,将往山上走去。刚上了山,他就遇到了一群狐狸。这个人对狐狸们说道:“亲爱的狐狸们,我想做一件价值千金的狐皮衣,因此来找你们商量一下,请你们把身上的皮剥下来送给我吧!”

“狐狸们见到此人要剥它们的皮,都心中害怕纷纷逃窜。一转眼就在高山深谷中消失了。这个人还觉得狐狸过于无礼,不给自己一点儿面子,就心中十分生气。

“过了些日子,这个周朝的人想要祭祀祖宗,但没有羊肉。他忽然想到,一般来说羊群常在附近吃草,便又高兴起来,将往那儿走去,对众羊说道:“亲爱的羊,我准备祭祀祖宗,要尽我孝心,却缺少羊肉。你们能不能急人所难,把一点儿羊肉贡献出来?”

“众羊听到这话吓得‘咩咩’地叫个不停,然后纷纷逃向密林之中。在这之后,这个周朝的人十年也没有完成一次裘衣制作,而五年也未曾举行完满的一次祭祀典礼。这是为什么呢?只不过因为他找错了对象罢了!
